María completed her Degree in Biology at the Universidad de Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela followed by a MPhil in Computational Biology at the University of Cambridge. During her DPhil at the University of Oxford she worked on mathematical modelling of cell cycle control in eukaryotes. Since then, she has been interested in combining evolutionary and systems biology approaches to understand diverse aspects of living systems, such as cell differentiation in trypanosomes (as a CIIE Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK) and how yeast cells recover from lack of control of mitotic entry during experimental evolution (as a Postdoc at the Institute for Genetics and Development in Rennes, France). She is currently interested in the mechanisms that result in gene content diversity and pangenomes, and in the evolution of regulatory networks, in particular cell cycle control in eukaryotes.
